This song was almost left off the album.

FIRST: This song started with the bass line which was written by Julie Dicterow. Julie is the hook master and we miss her. I wrote the keyboards to get her back. Adam plays one of the BEST BEATS EVER after the change. Sean didn’t write anything - he just played madness and it’s perfect. The appearing/disappearing, sounding like burning brains, sax is by Robbie Marshall.

The song lyrically is about 2 very different people: Gavin Mconnollogue and Octavio Solis. They passed 4 months apart. Octavio was this free spirit who got down with all of the pretty girls. Octavio was someone everyone loved, and loved everyone. He was working on some music with a friend one night and was found in a solo car accident off the road with a broken neck. I kinda believe he had life too right for the universe not to remove him. Gavin on the other hand was the sharp contrast.  He was an introvert who shot himself. Gavin was lost and confused. He smoked a lot of weed, drank too much, and never left the house.  Important to mention: other than leaving the house, Octavio did the same - but not the night he died. Gavin had no idea what to do with everything or anything. He was an observer and not a participant in light/life. I firmly believe that if Gavin wasn’t wasted the night he took his own life he would still be alive. But he was very aware of everything; he was lacking and it hurt really bad. Octavio knew the same feelings. He just handled them differently.
I relate to these people so harshly. This song was sung to Octavio from Gavin: Or from Danny to Adam.
Lyrics:

I would paint a sky you would take the stars and the night.

You believed you could fly. So you were gonna try.

While on my way down I was face to face with the ground.

Hearing every pound of the heart in my mouth.

Any other time any other day.

You would open wide and take it all down at once.

You were so in love. It never took too much.

I would like to touch but I would always run from the gun.

They said you were the one. He’s done before he’s begun.

I would paint a sky you would take the stars and the night.

You believed you could fly. I trusted that you were right.

The moral of the story is you have to “suck the day’s dick”.

Whatever that mean’s to you.

This is the title track of ‘The Order of the Slithering Serpent’. “The Order” of the Slithering Serpent is a secret society. The song was named the Slithering Serpent because it sounds like… a slithering serpent!
Sean wrote the music (the root of it).  The band was in a place where we were playing with virtuoso, musician strangers, with eclectic instruments who had never heard our songs before!
First and foremost we had a harp player named Ricky Rasura (Polyphonic Spree). There’s a section in this song after 3 min 30 seconds where we all drop out and let Ricky go. It was random & perfect. Then we had Gabe Noel on Cello - he said he heard ghosts and laid down the cello accordingly.
The song is lyrically about faith, free will, and fate. I personally believe in fate over free will. I’m sure at least half of the people who read this will disagree.
Picture the end of the song taking place in a graveyard - with 4 hand saws. Sean’s guitar is the wind. There is soul crushing trumpet by Tom Terrell, and Ricky’s stellar interpretation of Sean’s chord progression.
If Tom Robbins were writing this he would explain it as ‘A sound from the room of the wolf-mother wallpaper.  A sound emanating from the room where Jezebel frescoed her eyelids with history’s tragic glitter, where Delilah practiced for her beautician’s license, the room in which Salome dropped the seventh veil while dancing the dance of ultimate cognition, skinny legs and all.”

Watching all their dreams wash away. Will they live to see another dying day?
It has been so long hung on a hook in front of my face. Waiting for my mouth to come and take it’s place.
To be with you among stars till the end of time through the black holes in our eyes. We’ll beat on this heart.
Licking all the blood up off the floor. With you inside I’ll always find room for more. That old familiar speech makes you sound just like a whore. But you know that I love you, you more than anyone before.

Like a lot of songs we have recorded, this started as a random jam. (I was in the bathroom and I heard it coming through the wall). The jams usually start with the drums - sometimes an ALTerd version of another song. We were listening to The Black Heart Procession a lot back then. Pay no attention to the Man Behind the Curtain.

Ship in a Bottle is off our 1st record. - recorded in San Pedro. CA

This song has visual images to match the sounds.

The kick and the un-snared snare drum sound like 2 separate cannon balls being fired while ensuing kicks and toms sound like those balls landing and bouncing.

The one note guitar part sounds like rippled water running along side the ship.
The descending keyboard part sounds like the first drops of rain from the coming storm.

The bass sounds like a creaking ship.

All of these sounds were referenced in the lyrics subconsciously.

Come have a drink with us on our pirate ship!

Clouds is the first song on our first record but it was the last song of that group to be written. There’s something about recording a song when it’s freshly written that captures something you lose with a more rehearsed piece. It was written in rehearsal. It started as a jam and quickly found it’s form. I wrote the lyrics about a girl that had a boyfriend while I had a girlfriend. And that’s fucked up. However, the girls are long gone and the good song still remains.
